Saying hello is the first step in every English conversation. The good news: English has many simple ways to say it. You do not need a long sentence. One or two words are enough.
1. Hello
Hello works everywhere. You can say it to a friend, a teacher, a shop worker, or a doctor. It is polite and safe.
Hello, how are you?
2. Hi
Hi is shorter and friendlier. We usually use it with people we know: friends, family, and classmates.
Hi, Anna! Nice to see you.
3. Hey
Hey is very casual. Use it with close friends. Do not use it in a formal email or with a new boss.
Hey, are you free later?
4. Good morning
Good morning is for the early part of the day. It is polite and works in shops, offices, and hotels.
Good morning. Can I have a coffee, please?
5. Good evening
Good evening is for the evening. It sounds a little formal, and it is very useful in restaurants and hotels.
Good evening. A table for two, please.
A small tip
You can also add a question after your hello:
- Hello, how are you?
- Hi, how is your day?
- Good morning, did you sleep well?
The other person will answer, and the conversation starts.
Practise
Try to use one new greeting today. Say hi to a friend, and say good morning to someone at work or in a shop.
Small steps every day. That is how English grows.
